Stress affects us all at some time in our lives.

Work   having too much or too little to do, long working hours, poor organisational skills, difficult relationships with colleagues.

Life events   losing a loved one, getting divorced, becoming a parent, moving house, changing jobs, becoming unemployed

Money worries
Performance pressure
increasing demands from other people, whether at work or in their personal lives, and feel under pressure to perform well.

Conflict and arguments
with friends and family, work colleagues  or neighbours.

Uncertainty

Environmental factors   Commuting, discomfort from sitting in the same position for a long periods, Public transport (overcrowding, noise & delays).

Noise   excessive, intermittent or unpredictable noise.

Minor hassles - can all add up

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), stress is
"The adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them."

Tips for avoiding stress

  • Exercise regularly
  • Get a good nights sleep - half an hour of brisk walking three times a week will help reduce stress and promote restful sleep.
  • Keep a daily record of when you are feeling stressed. A pattern may emerge.
  • Think Positive
  • Use scent to change your mood - some can activate production of serotonin, the brain's feel-good chemical. Try: neroli, lavender, clary sage, jasmine.
  • Learn to relax - Practise deep-breathing, learn Tai Chi.
  • Get Organised - for a sense of control over your environment.
  • Plan breaks each day
  • Take time for yourself
  • Break the habit - do something different for a change.
  • Say no to unreasonable demands on your time
  • Talk through your concerns
  • Reduce your intake of caffine, alchohol & nicotine.

How much is enough ?

A little stress is life enhancing.
Too much stress is damaging to your health.
Anxiety is normal in stressful situations, and can even be helpful.
The burst of adrenaline and nerve impulses
which we have in response to stressful situations is the natural 'fight or flight' response.
